5Once Modified by Sapido It Works Great
By Harry S. Gerla
I just received my AU-5125 which I purchased from Sapido. I installed it using the drivers and utility that came on the CD accompanying the adapter. Now, however, while I am using it with a wireless router which uses both the 2.4mhz and 5mhz bands, I cannot see any channels on the 5mhz band and can’t connect to them. When I look at the Status page in the utility software, I notice that the Channel Set reads as follows: “Japan_No_DFS.” Does this mean that the adapter is set up for reading Japanese rather than US wireless channels?Update:It turns out that Sapido USA’s entire stock of AU-5125 adapters was set to pick of Japanese rather than US wi-fi channels. Sapido did finally realize what the problem was and remedied it. It took them a while (I didn’t get the modified adapter back until July 14th), but they finally got it right. That said, rating it now, I give it five stars. It is the best wireless usb adapter I’ve tried in terms of range and strength of signal, and the price is very reasonable too.

2Linux drivers hang the system
By Jon E Watte
This device is based on the RealTek 8192DU chipset. The Linux drivers for rtl8192cu do not recognize this adapter. But that’s OK, RealTek has downloadable drivers on their website.Unfortunately, those drivers are written for version 2.6 and 3.0 of the linux kernel. Most distributions are now using more modern kernels; Arch Linux is up to 3.6.So, after installing the linux headers and running the build script provided by Realtek, it tries to install the driver, but that crashes the kernel with a stack trace on the console pointing straight into the RealTek driver. It might be a great adapter, if only the drivers actually worked…

3Not as great as I expected
By Heather
We bought this because we just bought a dual band router due to interference with our baby monitor on the 2.4ghz. The installation was a little confusing, but we figured it out. The adapter switches between 2.4 and 5 ghz on its own, which is fine, except it takes it about two to three minutes after we turn on the baby monitor to realize that it can’t get any internet, then we have no internet, and then we have 5ghz. Our router also broadcasts the 5ghz at a much higher channel than this router can be set to, and by bringing the channel down we compromised how far it would broadcast. We split our 2.4 and 5 ghz bands so that we could choose which one the adapter connects to, but because of the limited channels, the internet is not any faster than it was before. We have eliminated the lag time issues we were having, so the speed is more consistent. Also, the stupid little antennae look cute but are in the way when you try to use the laptop.Overall, it’s a fair adapter, the price is right, and it did solve our problem of lag time and interference, but I think if I were to re-purchase, I would have just went with the more expensive adapter from the same company we ordered the router from.
